Format of the 2026 FIFA World Cup 

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will make history as the first edition featuring 48 teams. From 1998 to 2022, the tournament included 32 nations, but FIFA apparently decided the world needed more action this summer. 

This expansion also changed qualifications across every continent. Nations that previously struggled found it easier as more spots were opened. It also means a much larger competition with 104 matches scheduled compared to the 64 played during the 2022 edition. 

Alongside the extra matches, fans will also see more groups and an entirely new knockout stage added to the tournament structure.  

Group Stage 

There will be 12 groups of four teams, instead of eight in the 2026 edition. Every nation will play three group matches, with the top two teams from each group automatically qualifying for the knockout rounds.

The competition does not end there for third-place teams either. The eight best third-place finishers across all groups will also advance to the next stage, meaning more countries stay alive deeper into the tournament.

Group rankings follow the standard FIFA points system. Teams get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. 

Knockout Stage

The knockout rounds will not include 32 teams, but instead of the traditional 16. Because of this expansion, FIFA introduced a brand-new Round of 32 to eliminate 16 teams. 

From this stage onward, every match becomes win or go home. If a knockout game ends level after 90 minutes, teams move into 30 minutes of extra time. If the score remains tied after that, the winner is decided through a penalty shootout.

Key Dates & Schedule 

The 2026 World Cup officially begins on June 11 with Mexico vs South Africa in Mexico City. From there, fans will enjoy more than a month of football until July 19, when the final is played.

Host Cities & Venues

The FIFA 2026 WC will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Matches will be played in 16 cities across these countries – 10 in the US and 2 each in Mexico and Canada. 

Similarly, the US will host most of the matches, a total of 78, while Canada and Mexico will host 13 each. The final will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the venue with the largest capacity.
